If you’re looking for a weekend getaway that’s full of charm and historical significance, look no further than Havana, IL. This small town on the Illinois River has a lot to offer visitors, from boutique shopping and delicious dining options to fascinating museums and beautiful parks. Whether you’re a history buff or just looking for someplace new to explore, Havana is definitely worth a visit!
If you’re traveling from out of town, the best way to get to Havana is by car. The drive from Chicago is about two and a half hours, and there are plenty of Airbnbs in the area if you need a place to stay. Once you’re in town, be sure to check out some of the local attractions. The downtown alone offers so many great things: currently the home to three gorgeous boutiques, a beautiful home goods store, multiple restaurants & bars, a coffee shop, 4 different and unique B&B’s, and handful of other assorted businesses, including our portrait studio where we specialize in newborn photography.
The downtown has been blessed with some amazing business owners and dedicated community members who have worked hard over the years to revive this small town gem. Historic buildings are being restored and filled with new life and businesses. The Riverfront park, just down the block from downtown, offers beautiful views, and a great place for families to spend time. They also host a small campground and the local town pool nearby.
This weekend getaway is perfect for those who love the outdoors, good food & drink, and a little bit of shopping. There are plenty of things to do and see, and it’s all within walking distance in the charming downtown area. Havana, IL is a great place to relax and enjoy some time away from the hustle & bustle of the city. New events have been organized for entertainment and shopping, such as the downtown’s First Fridays & Night Market, where businesses stay open later on the first Friday’s of the month for evening shopping. The Riverfront Concert Series is a great way to relax and enjoy listening to live music. The Riverfront Car Show is another great attraction for car lovers. There are plenty of activities to keep everyone in the family happy, so come on down to Havana, IL for a weekend getaway! You won’t be disappointed.
Havana is also home to some great restaurants, like Babe’s bar & grill featuring a variety of delicious American cuisines, Chinatown, Los Charros Mexican Restaurant, Grandpa’s Restaurant, Sweetee’s (food & baked goods), Stella Mae’s Coffee Shop (all located downtown), Peaches (ice cream and food), Hardees, McDonalds, Pizza Hut, and Toni’s Family Restaurant (located in other parts of town). There is something for everyone’s taste!
Take a short trip across the Illinois River to the Fulton County side and you will find the beautiful Emiquon Nature Preserve, for those that love bird watching or nature in general. There is also Dickson Mounds Historical Museum, Orchard Hill (a family friendly apple orchard that’s great to visit in the fall), and Big Horse Vineyard. Fish or Kayak on the Spoon River, or hike the Nature Preserve Trails.
