When should newborn photos be taken? This is a question that many parents have. The answer, of course, depends on the baby. Some babies are ready to have their photos taken at just a few days old, while others may need a little more time. If you’re looking for a Peoria, IL Newborn Photographer, then you’ve come to the right place! In this blog post, we will discuss when newborn photos should be taken and what to expect from your newborn photo session.

Generally at Elizabeth Albers Photography, we schedule newborns sessions around 12-14 days after birth. This of course can vary depending on if your baby is born early or has a NICU stay for whatever reason. If you have multiples or your baby is born super early, it is generally best to schedule your newborn session when your actual due date would have been. If your baby is just born a little early, but healthy and requires no NICU stay, it’s fine to schedule at that 2-3 week mark! Newborns tend to sleep a lot and have their days and nights reversed still so this is the sweet spot for sleepy, curled up newborn photos.

We understand that not everyone can make it in for a session at that two week mark though. Newborns grow and change SO quickly! So if you cannot come in right at that two week mark, it is okay! I get a lot of messages from parents asking if 4 weeks old is too old for newborn pictures. The answer is no. It’s not too late! Are we going to all the same sleepy poses at 4 weeks that you would at 2 weeks? Maybe not, however with patience, and working with your baby’s established sleep schedule, you can still get some sweet sleepy “newborn like” photos at 4 weeks old. You can even get some adorable awake photos as well if your baby is content being awake. Newborns change and grow so quickly, so it is never too late to get newborn photos! Below are examples of a newborn we photographed at 14 days old and another newborn we photographed at 4 weeks old. Both sessions were adorable and their parents will treasure these images for a lifetime!
