Why is newborn photography so expensive?

You are pregnant and you decide to start searching for newborn photographers. After visiting a handful of websites, you are starting to see that newborn photography prices vary, and that they can be pricey. Every single photographer has a unique business. No two photographers are exactly the same. Susie might charge $250 for a newborn session, but she has minimal experience, no studio, and minimal props. She may have a beginner camera and little knowledge of proper lighting equipment. Brenda charges $2000, but she has invested years into newborn education and safety. She has a beautiful studio in a great location and you don’t have to bring anything because her studio is stocked full of backdrops, props, and outfits to use for your session. She is working with expensive camera and lighting equipment and knows how to use it. There are so many different levels of photographers to choose from. Different styles of editing the final images can also be a personal preference for the client. Do you prefer light/airy photos or a more natural light with rich color? The most important thing when it comes to newborn photography is safety. Has the photographer you’re searching for been well educated in posing and safety or are they a beginner with little knowledge? A lot of newborn poses you see online may not be safe if not done correctly and require multiple images being put together to make one final image, where the baby always has hands on them, but the final image shows just the baby. Here is an example of a pose that people love called “froggy”. This is a prime example of a composite image, this image was created using 3 separate photos where an assistant or the photographer’s hands were keeping the baby secure at all times.

Paying a photographer with experience, education, and the proper tools to create beautiful images of your baby that will always be cherished is worth the investment! Even experienced/expensive photographers have different business models though. Some photographers provide a great experience but only digital images for their clients. While others, such as our studio: Elizabeth Albers Photography, provide the luxury experience and gorgeous heirloom products for our clients. Heirloom products may not be a good fit for you, and that’s okay, but some people find it worth investing more in something they can cherish for a lifetime and pass down to their children and grandchildren. At our studio, we photograph newborns around 12-20 days after birth. Baby’s can be photographed anytime, but to get some of those sought after sleepy poses, you would want to have a session booked during that first 2-3 weeks. If you are looking to book a newborn session with us, it is best to schedule a consultation in your second trimester! At our studio we only offer one kind of session. This gives our clients the full experience of the newborn alone and includes parent photos and sometimes siblings and grandparents too. Those tiny details and precious moments are here and gone in the blink of an eye. Is the investment worth it to you? Do you want to cherish your newborn and family photos on heirloom products for a lifetime? If it is, our studio may be a great fit for you!
